I got a note from Matt Young <may6@cornell.edu> at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology that someone interested in recording the calls of RED CROSSBILLS [Bec-croisé des sapins] is heading towards the Maritimes. They would like to know in what areas these nomadic finches are being found now. The only ones I've seen this summer were four that flew over Mary's Point on August 1, heading east (on the way to Nova Scotia?).

If you have been finding Red Crossbills currently or recently, please let Matt and/or me know. (I let Matt know about Richard Stern's observation of a few at Brier Island Aug. 5.)

Red Crossbills are of special interest because it has been found that there are distinct populations distinguished by bill and body size and vocalizations. On-going research may prove that some of these are even separate species. For a summary of information about Red Crossbill forms, see http://research.amnh.org/vz/ornithology/crossbills/diagnosis.html .
