*This Week's Sky at a Glance* *Some night sky sights for August 10 =96 18*



On Saturday night, August 11, the *Perseid meteor shower* should be at its
best late at night. Find a dark spot with a wide-open view of the sky
overhead, bundle up against the late-night chill, lie back in a lounge
chair, watch the sky, and be patient. Around midnight you may see a meteor
a minute on average; fewer earlier. The thick waning crescent Moon rises by
2 a.m. (with Jupiter above it). But its modest light =91should be considere=
d
more of a nuisance than a deterrent.=92



*Arcturus *is the brightest star shining in the west at dusk. Look to its
right in the northwest for the* Big Dipper*. Keep an eye on the Dipper
through the evening hours as it scoops down and to the right.



On Friday, August 17, the *Moon *will go into its New Phase meaning we will
not see it at all during the night. Expect higher high tides and lower low
tides.



On Saturday, August 11, the *Sun *rose at 6:20 a.m. and sets at 8:36 p.m.
On Saturday, August 18, the sun will rise at 6:28 a.m. and set at 8:24 p.m.

*This Week's Planet Roundup*

*Mercury* is having a good apparition low in the dawn, brightening daily.
Look for it above the east-northeast horizon, far lower left of brilliant
Venus. Mercury is only magnitude +0.9 on the morning of August 11th but
brightens to =960.4 by the 18th.

*Venus* and *Jupiter* (magnitudes =964.5 and =962.2) shine dramatically in =
the
east before and during dawn. They've widened to about 24=B0 apart, with
Jupiter high to Venus's upper right.

*Mars*, *Saturn*, and the star *Spica *(very similar at magnitudes 1.1,
0.8, and 1.0 respectively) are bunched low in the west-southwest at dusk,
far below bright Arcturus. They form a triangle 4=BD=B0 tall that changes e=
very
day.
