Hi Bob & All,
One comment in Roland & Smith ("...and on burned areas between =
Westport and Big Cove.") suggests that it requires comparative freedom =
from competition. I don't know what the background of this comment is =
and whether these burned areas were upland or "bog".

  David,

Apparently the drainage attempt which consisted of a series of long =
trenches cut into the sphagnum was carried out in the 1950's. I have no =
knowledge of why the effort didn't work satisfactorily but the land is =
still unsuitable for commercial crops or livestock. As well, I'm not =
sure whether anyone knows what effect the drier state of the bog has on =
the population of G. peckii. It may be a benefit since elsewhere it =
really is an alpine species.

  Bob

    Hi Bob & All, Sep 3, 2012
I am not familiar with Big Meadow Bog but if it really is a bog =
then that historical drainage attempt almost certainly has nothing to do =
with the drier state of the bog.=20

Bog drainage, with the exception of favorable circumstances, =
ends in failure and in best circumstances usually requires sustained =
Herculean efforts such as well maintained perimeter drains, closely =
spaced tile drains and annual mole drainage.

We spent much of the day Thurs helping MTRI staff carry out a =
census of the endangered Mountain Avens (Geum peckii) in Big Meadow Bog. =
Interestingly, Brier is one of only 2 locations for this plant in =
Canada and has by far the largest number of plants. (Digby Neck is the =
other Canadian location and it is also found in the White Mountains in =
N.H.) The bog has been altered in an attempt to drain it for =
agricultural purposes (this is historical) so the bog is drier now=20
