A spar and a mast are the same thing, at least from my sailing days. The
boom is the piece of wood that the sail bottoam attaches to and swings to
come about and catch the wind.. It is also the section that hits you in the
head if you don't duck when 'coming about'. It is horizontal to the boat where
as the spar and mast are perpendicular.
In my opinion the spar goes with a smaller sailing boat and the mast would
be for a very big one like a schooner. Oh and Jim the spar and mast are the
ones that are standing tall with a sail attached and maybe a flag telling you
the country of origin or yacht club.
Hope that tells you what you want to know.
