Hi, folks. there is an oak near our house that has several large =
colonies of orange fungi growing on it. (The tree does not look =
healthy.) They look like the internet images of either of the two you =
have mentioned. I have three questions about these fungi:
1) Are there any poisonous look-alikes to these?
2) Have any of you eaten either?
3) Are they harming the tree?
Thanks.

Hi Jim. Would you post this on NatureNS for me? Thanks. =96 Nancy

  Re: Berkeley=92s Polypore (Bondarzewia berkeleyi):

  =20

I know of two sites for this fungus in Port Williams (Kings County). =
In both cases the fungus appears each year in mid summer at the base of =
a very large old oak, and persists for weeks. This species is not listed =
in Gourley=92s Index of the Fungi of Nova Scotia, but the latter was =
published 30 years ago and there may be more recent records somewhere. =
As far as I know, the Port Williams sites have not yet been recorded.=20

  =20

Another fungus to look for at the base of big old oaks is Hen of the =
Woods (Grifola frondosa), which should be starting to show up very soon =
if it hasn=92t already. It has been considered rare in NS but I know of =
at least six sites in the Port Williams area, and would expect to find =
it elsewhere in the province.=20
