Hi all
Charlie Kendell and I spent the better part of the day at Big I. =
yesterday Oct. 12. Although it was windy, rain did not come till we were =
leaving at 4 so we had a pretty good day. Land birds were thin in =
numbers, but waterfowl are starting to build-up particularly Surf =
Scoter, Canada Geese and Red-breasted Mergansers. Sparrow numbers are =
down considerably from last visit. Myrtles were the only warblers =
observed. Dunlin numbers were pretty good with 67, and a late Spotted =
Sandpiper was seen along the main causeway beach. There were 8 shorebird =
species including a Wilson's Snipe flushed near the pond at Harmony =
Hill.=20
Despite a good number of Horned Grebes and increasing numbers of =
Red-throated Loons, no Red-necked grebes were observed.=20
A female Indigo Bunting was observed and Charlie photographed along the =
side of Docker Rd.=20
While searching for Nelson's Sparrows along the south edge of the big =
saltmarsh, we almost walked up to Peregrine Falcon which took of with =
what looked to be claws full of eelgrass. When we walked up to the =
nearby take-off spot, we discovered a pile of Blue Jay feathers and a =
Blue Jay bill! The remains must have been in the eelgrass in the =
falcon's claws.=20
Only butterfly observed was a Red Admiral. My e-Bird submission is below =
for the complete listing.=20

cheers
Ken
