["Ode" means dragonflies/damselflies (Odonata), "leps" means
Lepidopterans, e.g. butterflies, moths, skippers.]

OCT. 25, 2012 - I think I heard a fox sparrow song today (just once)
just before dusk in Wolfville. New at my feeder was a red-breasted
nuthatch. And my chipmunk was still active today.

OCT. 26, 2012 - chipmunk still active in my Wolfville yard;

- Gesner's Pond: 9 hooded mergansers, including 3 males and 6 females
or immatures.

Stella's Pond (Ducks Unlimited Can.): 3 female or imm. hooded
mergansers.

Canning Aboiteau: 8 greater yellowlegs seen standing in the very
shallow water of the distant bend of the Habitant River toward town
from the aboiteau -- I was very far from them, but the identification
is pretty certain (scoped).

Habitant River in Canning: about 40 mallards, ca. 10 black ducks.

Harris's Pond in Canning: 500 Canada geese and 10+ gulls.

Silver Lake, Lakeville: no geese, 20 herring gulls, 7+ hooded
mergansers.

MINER'S MARSH, Kentville: 11+ Wilson's snipes (foraging or sleeping,
mostly in 2s -- from the marsh end of the bridge over the river, turn
left, then look along the edges of the small island or the trailside
edge of the marsh;

- lots of small, dark brownish, skimmer dragonflies that were flying
about everywhere and landing on people (one pair was in tandem)
(beautiful Sunny & fairly calm & warmish afternoon);

- 1 painted lady butterfly seen very well, and 2+ clouded sulphurs;

- a few fruit-pods of common milkweed had clusters of seeds adhering
to the pods and very beautiful in the Sunlight -- oodles of pods have
not yet opened;

- 20+ mallards, 3+ black ducks, 4+ green-winged teals;

- interesting and variously sized tracks in the mud of the bank of
the Cornwallis River (look down from the bridge) were probably all
from raccoons?

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
