Mostly they were =A0used u= nder the ice=0Afor smelts. The smelts were popular eating fish at one time= =0Abut not so much any more.=A0=0ASetting them in the right spot you could = catch a lot of silverside=A0=0Alocally called caplin. Calling them silversi= de would get you a stare=0Athat said "Oh your a Johnny come lately!" where = I grew up.=0AHowever not to be confused with the caplin they=0Acatch in New= foundland. Both are quite delicious for those of us with an=0Aacquired tast= e. Perhaps not so much for people who never ate them.=0AUnless they were re= ally hungry of course.=0AIn the old days a bucket of boiled=0Apotatoes mixe= d with some bran topped with a shovel full of caplin=0Amade an old sow very= happy - put a curl in her tail!=0ANot to be feed to hogs for slaughter unl= ess you like your bacon=0Ato smell like fried herring - some folks made the= mistake - LOL=0AReliable sources - actual fishermen with permit to fish th= em -=0Atell me the market for the silversides is for zoos - they feed them= =0Ato fish eating birds and mammals. Fishing them is a good sideline=0Aas m= ost other fisheries in the Gulf of St Lawrence have stopped for the winter.= =0AIt is hard to believe there are so many. If you were to go Beach Point o= n a nice day in=0ANovember they swim by in a steady cloud. My Father didn't= bother a bag-net=0Aa potato basket could catch all he needed.=0ANowadays t= he fishery is controlled closely by the Department of Fisheries.
