Subject: A Few Recent Encounters

The male Red-bellied Woodpecker continues to be a daily visitor. =
Interestingly, it prefers millet to more traditional fare. Late last =
week we had a brief visit by a first winter male Baltimore Oriole and =
several Purple Finches. Here's hoping there are no reverse migrants of =
orioles, a very vulnerable species. The American Tree Sparrows have =
finally returned to our place so all is right with the world.

Last Sunday Laura and I took a walk around Point Pleasant Park. The =
highlight was a Hermit Thrush in the trees near the exercise equipment. =
White-winged Crossbills continue to reside in the Duncan's Cove area =
especially between "The Castle" and the Champaign Dam. The dam was built =
in 1941 to provide water to the soldiers manning the coastal defenses. =
This morning I took a leisurely hike along the coastal barrens of =
Crystal Crescent Beach Provincial Park. I was surprised to meet a =
Killdeer near Deep Cove, firstly flying overhead and then standing on =
the rocks further along the shoreline.

It's been a good migration with few strays left behind. I await the =
rugged western mountain birds to arrive on their winter wanderings.

Hans

PS: The spotted fawn was back. It's mother appears to be quite small, =
perhaps a yearling. I wish them well.
