As it happens, I was there today (it was a time for light relief before a =
major dental
appointment in Dartmouth), and found the birds pretty much where Ross did.=
 However, by
waiting until most of the birds had come in off the Salmon River estuary t=
o the Jennings
farm in Masstown, which took place between 1000 and 1100, a couple of hour=
s after high
water, I got a count of about 1500 in the Shore Road field closest to Hwy =
2/4 and 1000+
west of the main farm but also N of Shore Road. I couldn't find any signif=
icant flocks
anywhere else in the Masstown area, in the Onslows, or in North River. It =
appears that all
the local geese massed in the one area today.

During the spectacular arrival of several hundred Canadas about 1030, I sa=
w small, short-
necked, stubby-billed goose dropping in. I was pretty sure it was a Cackli=
ng Goose, but
couldn't be sure in flight. I was lucky enough to find it on the ground, a=
nd a companion
besides, in the throng and confirm that they were CACKLING GEESE. One was =
a classic
"Richardson's" Goose, with relatively light breast, but the other was noti=
ceably darker and
had a slightly smaller white cheek patch - probably still within the param=
eters of a
Richardson's Cackling Goose, but easily distinguishable from the first bir=
d. I found it
interesting that when the two Cackling Geese were facing away from me, the=
ir back colour
was slightly but distinctly lighter than that of the Canadas. I was able t=
o pick them out
several times using that feature.

Among the Canadas, about 25% could be attributed to the dark, northern B. =
c. interior, some
of which come from Greenland. As the flocks arrived, I could easily pick =
out the dark birds
in flight, and I was impressed that they tended to come in in groups separ=
ate from the white-
breasted big Canadas, perhaps families, or extended families.

There were also 2 Killdeers in the Shore Road field closest to Hwy 2/4.
