All,

I realize many of you aren't hunters, but some are. Please feel free to
forward this request to any duck hunters you may know.

Many of you know me as a biologist at StFX; I am currently doing some work
with DNR on bird collisions with wires over the Canso Causeway. Rarely do
we find an intact bird since scavengers (both bird and mammal) normally get
there before us. So we have to identify the remains based on what is left
of the plumage or bones.

Although we have a decent bone collection at StFX, we are missing some of
the ducks, mostly diving ducks. If anyone wants to contribute a specimen to
us, that would be wonderful. The list below is of all the ducks we need,
not just the divers. You can get in touch with me at rlauff@stfx.ca. Intact
specimens would be great, but if the breast meat was removed, that would be
fine, too.

Thank you,

Randy

White-winged Scoter

Surf Scoter

Any Scaup (Greater, Lesser, Ring-neck, Canvasback, Redhead, Tufted - yeah,
I know most of these [except greaters] are not so common or even rare
around here, but if I don't ask...)

American Wigeon (European would be good too...there's at least one in the
upper Antigonish Harbour right now)

Gadwall

Bufflehead

Barrow's Goldeneye
