Thank you Wayne for your kind remarks,And Yes your reaction re Mr Sheldon i=
s a very commontheme that goes through a lot of my emails on the subject. As=
to your comments about "neglecting" other worthy naturalists, not at all - =
Promoting one only makes it easier to promote others. There is lots of Natur=
alists organizations in Nova Scotia, I don't belong to anyand only a couple=
of local groups - not my thing. It seems a good project for them to get inv=
olve with. However I am only a simple fellow who never graduated from High S=
chooldoing what I can to promote the province. I might get a few anglers wh=
o wantto visit the province that way.Have a nice winterPaul

=0A=0A=0A=0AHello Paul,
=0A=A0
=0AThanks for sharing this.=A0 Although I well remember Charles A. Sheldon'=
s writings on wilderness, mountain sheep, and Denali from my time as natura=
list at Kluane NP, I was unaware of his Nova Scotia connection.=A0 A plaque=
or small exhibit at his cabin site sounds like a good idea=A0-=A0the NS go=
vernment has not been very good about historic plaques in general - more at=
convenient pull-offs along highways would greatly add to the interest of a=
ny area for visitors and encourage longer stays=A0- instead the government =
seems intent on forcing people to travel at top speed from one point to ano=
ther with=A0no incentive for stops along the way.
=0A=A0
=0AI don't know about a Sheldon festival - how many equally deserving pione=
ers are we neglecting? - but I 'm in favour of anything that recognizes and=
helps preserve our knowledge of N. S. pioneer naturalists and conservation=
ists.=A0 The late Merritt Gibson did a lot in that area, especially for Val=
ley naturalists, but there is so much more that could be done.=A0 Names fro=
m the=A0South Shore that come to mind are E. Chesley Allen, R. R. McLeod, H=
arrison F. Lewis, Evelyn Richardson, etc., and I'm sure that you and Peter =
Hope would know more of the "Pioneers of Keji", including those who pushed =
for its preservation as a National Park, that might be a good theme for a f=
estival or museum in that region.=A0=20
=0A=A0
=0ASpeaking of Chesley Allen (father of NSBS pioneer C. R. K. Allen), his b=
ook The Out-of-Doors was about the only nature book in rural schools around=
the province=A0when I was young, and so an inspiration to me and many othe=
rs.=A0 He and Lewis also did the first published Christmas Bird Count in No=
va Scotia (Yarmouth in 1913), and that reminds me that I must get back to f=
inishing compilation of mine!
