Since Monday I've been watching a frosty Redpoll among the dozens of Common
Redpolls at my bird feeder. This morning I got the last field mark I wanted
to confirm a Hoary Redpoll; it was a nearly all white rump. The other field
marks are smaller bill than Common Redpoll, lightly streaked flanks, more
extensive white on coverts and secondaries (this was especially apparent),
and mainly unmarked undertail coverts (this was seen well also). This would
appear to be an adult femaile of the low-Arctic exilipes subspecies.
