Subject: Bald Eagle Attack on Lesser Scaup

Ray Staszko was photographing a surfacing Lesser Scaup at Purcell's Cove =
when "whamo" the bird disappeared in the talons of a Bald Eagle. =
Although I have never studied the predatory behaviour of a Bald Eagle I =
suspect that diving ducks are more susceptible to this king of demise =
than dabbling ducks. The Bald Eagle can see the diver swimming under =
water and time its attack to coincide with the helpless victims =
surfacing location. The diver cannot see behind it when swimming under =
water unlike a dabbler that spends most of its time on the surface =
looking about and in the protection of a group, with alarm modes =
available. Also a dabbler can take off vertically from the surface =
whereas the diver needs a take off run.

Ray has specialized on the sea birds at Purcell's Cove this winter and =
has tallied the following birds, most photographed(some are my =
sightings); Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Great Cormorant, Canada Goose, =
Black Duck, Mallard, American Wigeon, Canvasback, Greater Scaup, Lesser =
Scaup, Common Eider, Long-tailed Duck(Old Squaw), White-winged Scoter, =
Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Bald Eagle, =
Purple Sandpiper, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed =
Gull, Glaucous Gull, Iceland Gull, Dovekie and Black Guillemot. I've =
probably missed some birds.

If Ray permits I'll post the story and photos of the Bald Eagle attack =
on the Lesser Scaup in my on line journal.

Hans
