*This Week's Sky at a Glance*

*Some night sky sights for March 15 - 23*

There was some comment last week about not mentioning the *PanSTARRS comet*.
I did not mention it as thought possibly naturalists may not be following
it due to its magnitude (brightness). That may have been presumptive on my
part so including it this week. A sketch of how it should look will be
included in the Nature Moncton distribution list as photos can be inserted
there.

*Comet PanSTARRS*, for all the attention it's receiving, has turned out to
be barely visible to the unaided eye, and only if you know exactly where to
look. That would be low in twilight, just a little to the right of due west
now, about 45 minutes after sunset. Use binoculars or, better, your birding
scope.

As soon as it gets dark now, the *Big Dipper* has climbed as high in the
northeast as Cassiopeia has sunk in the northwest.

On Tuesday, March 19 the *Moon *will go into its First-quarter Phase
meaning it will rise at noon and set at midnight.

On Wednesday, March 20, *Spring *begins in the Northern Hemisphere at the
equinox, 8:02 a.m., when the Sun crosses the equators of both Earth and sky
heading north for the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, fall begins.

Now that spring is here, *Orion *(three-star belt) is in the southwest
after dark and leaning over to slide soon down to the horizon and is framed
by the two brightest star like points in the sky: *Jupiter *off to his
right and *Sirius *to his left.

On Saturday, March 16, the *Sun *rose at 7:29 a.m. and will set at 7:26
p.m. giving 11 hours 57 minutes of daylight hours. On Saturday, March 23,
the sun will rise at 7:15 a.m. and set at 7:35 p.m. to give 12 hours 20
minutes of daylight hours (these values are for Moncton, New Brunswick).
*
*
*This Week's Planet Roundup*

*Mercury *is still far down in the glow of dawn.

*Venus *and *Mars *are hidden in the glare of the Sun.

*Jupiter *(magnitude -2.2) comes into view high in the southwest after
sunset and dominates the western sky later in the evening. Lower left of
Jupiter is orange *Aldebaran*. They both set in the west-northwest around
the middle of the night.

*Saturn *(magnitude +0.3) rises in the east-southeast around midnight.
