There will be a presentation on Lead Poisoning in Bald eagles at 7:30 pm on
March 28 at the regular monthly meeting of the Nova Scotia Bird Society at
the Natural History Museum In Halifax. Presenter is Helene Van Doninck DVM
of the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. All are welcome.

Presentation Summary:
Poisoning from spent lead ammunition has been documented in many species
worldwide and is an issue that occurs repeatedly in Nova Scotia in the bald
eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). This presentation will discuss the
science behind lead poisoning , concerns about the entry of lead into the
human food chain through lead harvested game, and the solution to this
solvable problem: the use of non-lead ammunition. The key to decreasing the
incidence of lead poisoning is hunter outreach. Education efforts in Nova
Scotia have resulted in positive and groundbreaking initiatives.
