We experienced a very similar situation here.  Our fairly regular group of 
25 or so suddenly (today) swelled to over a hundred birds everywhere - at 
feeders, in the trees, on the ground, back in the woods behind the house! 
Amazing!  Despite the rain, they were happily making a big splash in the 
birdbath as well.  Great fun to watch!
