All,

Two folks who I've known for about 20 years feed the birds routinely,
including providing suet for the woodpeckers.

I was alerted by them to the potential of an odd woodpecker yesterday
around 4:30. The folks looked diligently through their NA guide, then went
on line and are convinced what they saw was a Great Spotted Woodpecker. I
went to the home and the bird(s) was not there. The two folks were clearly
excited. They are confident that not only have they not seen this type of
woodpecker before, it is not a Flicker, Pileated (both of which they are
familiar with) or anything else from their NA guide. They have described it
as being larger than a Hairy, lots of black on the head (but no yellow
spot), and white-spotted wings. They found GSWO photos on line. The bird
was there for many minutes on several occasions.

Will keep you posted.

Randy
