Being picked up is a new one on me but I've had encounters like this 
with ruffed (here in NS), spruce (in ON) and blue (in Colorado) 
grouse. In many cases I think this is a predator distraction tactic 
similar to the broken-wing act. The action is "look at me" and the 
result is "don't see my chicks". It works very well...!
