Hi Paul Ruggles:

I hope you enjoy all the amazing exchanges of info on NatureNS. I feel
compelled to respond after reading Paul MacDonald's email. Keji would be
truly in trouble if I were its brains.

I work at Keji as a biologist (latest official title-Resource Management
Officer II...there have been many changes in the Parks Canada org). I saw
your email regarding searching out some otters. We've had numerous
sightings on the Mersey River just above the Visitor Centre, but I haven't
had any reports lately. I can check the most recent reports and get back to
you. Paul MacDonald probably has the most recent observations since he is
often out fishing in Keji. Those fly fishermen are a fountain of knowledge!
I am sure if you track down some of these folks, (Reg Baird and Paul being
among the "ring leaders"), you'll get the locations of most recent otter
activity. Of course, they are fishermen, so it may be best not to believe
everything!

It seems that I notice the otters more so during fall-winter. I once recall
a whole group (family, I presume) swimming in Black River, Kouchibouguac
National Park, during early winter. There was a skim of ice over the river
and the otters seemed to be frolicking with the ice, swimming under it,
breaking through it, making lots of noise. It was quite a show!

Regards,

Donna
