Hi Nancy and All=0AAll conifer trees produce copious amounts of pollen.=0AA=
s some have suggested White Pine is one of the main producers here=0Abut he=
mlock, fir and spruce do also. One of the reasons old growth forests=0Aare =
so important to the health of the area.=0AMy best pollen story was a number=
of years ago, my daughter was studying=0Ageology - she came home one day a=
nd said Dad - I want you to show me a hemlock tree.=0AI know what million y=
ear old hemlock pollen looks like from the rocks we study=0Abut not the tre=
e! The question=A0 was solved looking out the window.=0AThe reason pollen i=
s so important it is a key link in the Nitrogen Cycle. A long time since=0A=
I studied that and I forgot the formulas as soon as I passed the course. So=
me of my friends=0Aremembered them longer as they had to repeat the course!=
=0APollen as you say falls in the water and it provides food for the small =
things, nymphs and other=0Alife forms. Small things feed bigger things and =
after awhile the nitrogen in the pollen ends up=0Ain fish, loons, turtles a=
nd so on. Some might even end up in my frying pan.=0AAs the story in the Bi=
ble, it is really manna from heaven for Nature in NS!=0AEnjoy the spring=0A=
