22 June 2013 - Big Indian Lake Trail=2C HRM
We hiked the Old St. Margaret's Bay Road trail as far as the Prospect River=
crossing (at the outlet of Little Indian Lake). The trail requires a dive=
rsion around an extensive bog=2C and the bridge is gone across the Prospect=
River. We also went on a side trail as far as the dam at the outlet of Bi=
g Indian Lake. =20
It was sunny=2C but there were very few butterflies in evidence - one swall=
owtail=2C a few azures=2C and an elusive skipper. No photos=2C alas.
But a flowering Rosa rugosa had attracted many interesting insects=2C of wh=
ich I managed to photograph two. Can anyone assist with identification?

I managed a photo of a dragonfly=2C but have failed to put a name to it. C=
an anyone help?

We later found a patch of white violets=2C and I took some photos. They we=
re Lance-leaved Violets=2C a life plant for me. The Flora of NS says it is=
fairly common=2C but I have evidently failed to see them before. Here are=

Martine spotted a frog=2C and from the photo I think it to be a Pickerel Fr=
og=2C which I have not seen before. A photo is here:

My last photo is from our garden=2C of the largest Green Frog I have ever s=
een. It is a male=2C with a loud call. How long lived are Green Frogs? M=
y sense is that this fellow has been present in our yard for at least 4 yea=
rs (he gets bigger each year). Here is his portrait:
