Hi all
A little overcast today ( July 2) in Pictou Co., but enough sunny =
periods to look for a few butterflies. I targeted a few under-surveyed =
squares in the Scotsburn area mostly on the Cape-Cape trails and a few =
back roads. My main target area was a large bog off the Dufferin Rd. The =
bog was a great place to be. White-fringed Orchid (scores) and Calopogon =
( hundreds) were in fine form as well as the Pitcher-plants. The bog was =
dense with Bog Coppers probably more than 80 in the area I covered. Near =
the bog, just before I got on the trail at the intersection of Hardwood =
Hill Rd. and Dufferin Rd.. I was able to observe and photograph my =
first ever Little Wood-Satyr. New for the year were Northern Pearly-eye =
in 2 squares.=20
In the bog area were the usual bog birds,-Nashville and Palm Warblers, =
Lincolns' and Swamp Sparrow and Common Yellowthroat. A distant blackbird =
was not Id'd. possibly Rusty, but maybe just a grackle. There were =
however, 2 Common Nighthawks hunting overhead. I wished they were lower =
as I had forgotten to put on some bug spray!
On a smaller bog in the Poplar Hill area, I saw 4 more Bog Coppers.=20
I found 2 very noisy Yellow-bellied Sapsucker nests today and one last =
evening- all in live poplar.=20

I had a total of at least 10 species of butterfly. Here is the list with =
approx. numbers seen:
European Skipper-9
Arctic Skipper-1
Hobomok's Skipper-8
Long-dash Skipper-1
Common Ringlet-3
Canadian Tiger Swallowtail-1
Bog Copper-80+
Northern Pearly-eye-3
Little Wood-Satyr-1
Northern Crescent-15

Great day to be outside! Much to observe!=20

cheers
ken
