The person that could answer Harold's questions would be Chris Majka who ma=
y not even be on this listserver any longer. Other people with knowledge of=
these would be David McCorquodale (probably too busy) & David Webster.

As an aside=2C just because hordes of mosquitoes found you does not mean it=
's because of the decline of the Little Brown Bat. Probably just an effect =
of the many days of rain which is a boon=2C of course=2C to mosquitoes.

Subject: [ValleyNature] evening spectacle of ?scarab beetles=2C Greenwich

JULY 4=2C 2013 - This evening at 9:15 p.m. Harold Forsyth in Greenwich phon=
ed me to say he had an insect spectacular going on in his back yard. I arr=
ived there at about 9:30=2C and found Harold in his back yard. At first I =
couldn't see the beetles=2C which Harold said were everywhere in the air an=
d in/on the foliage of maple trees and other shrubs. Harold had caught a f=
ew and put them in a big jar=2C and to me they looked like small relatives =
of June beetles=2C i.e.=2C scarab beetles=2C about a third of the length of=
a June beetle and coloured mostly light brown or tan. Harold showed me ho=
w they were obviously attracted to each other and forming living clumps of =
8-10 beetles that were actively mating. I held the small flashlight on a c=
lump for Harold's camera=2C and=2C as it turned out=2C he got several quite=
good photos. He sent four of them to me: one showing lots of the beetles =
on the maple foliage and in flight there=2C too=3B one showing a mating clu=
mp of beetles=3B and two showing a dorsal view of a single beetle.

Whoever is interested=2C please ask me off-list for the photos. Thanks to =
Harold for being so sharp-eyed=2C for perseverance with his camera=2C and f=
or calling me about this.=20

By the way=2C Harold and I were being devoured by those mosquitoes that And=
rew Hebda predicted would be more abundant than usual=2C thanks to the disa=
ppearance of the little brown bats.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
