Hi Paul & All, July 18, 2013
There is I think a lot to be said for small, simple dams with =
standpipes and ample spillways to moderate stream flow that is rendered =
unstable by residential or commercial developments or by large =
clearcuts. In the absence of such buffering structures it is possible to =
squander 20% of the annual streamflow in a 3 hour flood.=20
There seems to be a perception that dams are undesirable period. =
Perhaps some are but it is dangerous and wrong to manage natural =
resources using a one size fits all approach.
Which is preferable, installation of small buffering dams or letting =
streams in 'developed ' areas become open storm sewers ? Or enclosing =
the stream in a pipe and paving it for parking; a common approach.
Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville

Penobscot River
Hi Dusan
I don't know about the others but the one on the Mushamush=20
was for environmental reasons. If it was up to NS Power
they would have left it to rot away! I had some first hand knowledge
of how that worked!
Enjoy the summer
Paul

A number of smaller hydro dams in Nova Scotia have been =
decommissioned over the last few decades. They include ones on Liscomb =
River (Powerhouse Falls), East River (near the community of East River), =
Mushamush River (Clearland), Medway River (Salter Falls), Barrington =
River, and elsewhere. But all of these closures took rplace because of =
economic reasons, not environmental ones...=20
