Hi Laura & All, July 25, 2013
The wharf borer (Nacerdes melanura) is common in saltwater wharves =
here (so I read) but is an Oedemerid, not a Cerambycid.

These beetles must be related to the wharf borers. Their structure is =
similar although these root borers are bigger. I think they (wharf =
borers) like damp or wet wood. Does anyone know anything about them? I =
see a number of them each year late spring-early summer.

Hi Nancy:
This appears to be the Brown Prionid (Orthosoma brunneum). It varies =
in length from 25-50 mm.These are known as "tooth-necked" longhorns =
because of distinctive spines along the sides of the pronotum. In an =
enlarged image, these spines can be easily seen.=20
