Hi Marian & All, Aug 8, 2013
That is interesting. The most extensive stand I have seen was about =
1996 in sparse short birch on south facing highway fill (much slate) on =
the 101 highway just west of Exit 13. This would have been about 25 =
years after construction. The medium would have had good aeration but =
almost no surface litter or organic matter. As the trees got larger the =
Lady's Slippers died out.=20
Both recently exposed shale and slate would be somewhat acidic due =
to oxidation of Ferrous Sulfide (Pyrite).
Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
