Hi Jim E & All, Aug 18, 2013
There are two types of common names, officially sanctioned common =
names (usually of academic origin) and genuine common names that have a =
folk origin and have been passed down from one generation to the next. =
Sometimes the two coincide; sometimes not.
Snowshoe Hare and Rabbit is a classic example. Many, including DW, =
grew up calling Spreading Dogbane Milkweed; it does have milky juice.

the name army worm is mis-applied to Tent Caterpillers. The true army =
worms are genera Leucania and Pseudaletia, not closely related to tent =
caterpillars
