The planting of the wisteria would = have pre-dated the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens by decades. Wisteria grows well in this area of Annapolis County and produces robust = flowers as well as viable seeds. Here in Dartmouth, my neighbor has wisteria. = It is humongous and blooms profusely. By the way, I have a trumpet vine that also blooms. A few years ago, I = heard Marjorie Williston say that it wouldn=E2=80=99t bloom in our = climate. I think our warmer temps. have tipped the balance for these = two vines; plus there may be more hardy varieties on the market. By the way, trumpet vine has the same type of compound leaves as = wisteria=E2=80=94but not the =E2=80=9Cbeans=E2=80=9D. Roscoe Filmore says in his book it is perfectly wood hardy but the did not tend to flower. He attributed that to the flower buds not been winter hardy here but on the internet I read that it will not flower if fertility is high so perhaps that was = why=20 Roscoe's didn't flower but those in Annapolis Royal were growing where nutrients were at a premium. A nursery in Ontario will deliver plants to the door and have a number = of different cultivars of different colors available. The leaves and vines have a reputation of being poisonous so all in all its perhaps not so = popular. The Tussock moth is still in its cocoon - will let you know when it = hatches. Today, we = stopped at the roadside to take a better look. The vegetation turned = out to be a huge mass of woody vines growing pretty much rampant on what = appears to be a large vacant lot on the west side of the street. The = plot of vines is extremely vigorous and jungle-like and looks to be = aggressively growing over everything in its path. I intend to return to = take more photos and also estimate just how large an area is occupied by = the vines. =20 Larry broke off a section of vine and one of the big seed pods which has = a velvety texture. Is anyone familiar with this plant and can you = confirm the ID? We checked range maps and it looks as though it is a = serious invasive in many U.S. states, but we couldn't find much in the = way of references for Canada. Does anyone know if this species has = become a nuisance anywhere else in Nova Scotia? Also, we came across a = website for the Invasive Species Alliance of Nova Scotia. There is a = button saying "Report an Invasive Species", but it goes to a "Not Found" = page, so isn't of much use.
