I did check the flowers west of the Acadia Arena, and again there
were oodles of honey bees but very little else. I saw a single small
bumble bee, and yesterday at Angus's site there was a single smallish
bumble bee. Practically nothing else was noticed, and of course
honey bees are not even close to natural insects.

Angus's mention of paper wasps also deserves a personal comment.
Around our house in Wolfville we frequently see individual paper
wasps, but, in our back garden shed, where the roof of the entrance
way above the door is ideal for their hanging nests and access even
when the door is closed, the number of occupied nests is down to a
single one (out of 5 or 6 or more that are still there from earlier).

Also two of our porch light fixtures have mud nests of black-and-
yellow mud-dauber wasps. These wasps are seldom observed, and I
think there are other species of hymenopterans that actually use
these old nests in the same way as the nest-builders do.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
