An "upwelling bubble" is characteristic of Humpbacks so probably of other w=
hales too. They dive deep then come up under the school (usually herring) =
& by blowing=2C force the school to the surface. The bubble is well ahead o=
f the whale which=2C in my limited experience=2C the whale always comes str=
aight out of the water (but does not actually breach).=20

Laurie very cool vid - the breach was an added bonus!=20
At one point on Monday I noticed a 15' diameter patch of the surface where =
it looked like upwelling bubble. We were probably in 50-60' of water at th=
e time=2C about 3 miles west of Pictou Island and about the same from the N=
S shore=2C and in the middle of the action at the time.
I'm pretty darn curious as to what that was all about=2C but probably will =
never now for sure.

Minkes can also break the normal baleen whale rule of eating mouthfuls of f=
ish and do take individual fish at times. Their smaller size allows them m=
ore leeway in their consumption rate.

These feeding frenzies are amazing to watch but as you say=2C not so much f=
or the herring.

Do Minkes eat herring? =20
I know they are baleen whales (Mysticeti) but my understanding is that in s=
ome circumstances they will take fish. =20
Reason I ask is there was there were several very large schools of herring =
in the area around Pictou Island yesterday afternoon Monday Oct 14 easily o=
bservable from the deck of the PEI ferry and whales - I believe Minkes=2C t=
hey were to big for Pilots - were following them.
There were also lots of Grey Seals=2C Atlantic White Sided Dolphins=2C Harb=
our Porpoise=2C and clouds of seabirds =96 Northern Gannets=2C Cormorants e=
tc diving and squacking around=2C above=2C and probably under the understan=
dably agitated shoals of fish.
Quite a very cool show - unless you were a herring.=20
