Dear All, Nov 16, 2013
While stacking some wood at North Alton today I noticed a nearby =
patch of a perky looking moss, flicked it to confirm by the puff of =
spores that it was indeed shedding and brought a bit home to confirm by =
hand lens that it was Tetraphis pellucida. As usual it was growing in a =
pure vigorous stand on the remnants of a stump. It appeared to have two =
waves of sporophytes; mature and not even close but curiously no spent =
sporophytes. Does something eat them or do they just fade away ?

I noticed a vigorous pure patch in a different part of the woods on =
July 5 (also on the ghost of an old stump) and thought I had mentioned =
it in an e-mail but can find no trace of it (to check whether it was =
shedding spores then). Is my computer eating e-mails or did I just write =
that one in my head ? But I can't find that copy either. =20

Also I noticed one fly of unusual design on White Birch stump that =
was wet and presumably oozing sap (cut Nov 11).

Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
