Hi all,

On 24 Nov 2013, Bird Studies Canada and Nature Conservancy of Canada held
our 5th annual Wild for Waterfowl Count at the Port Joli Important Bird
Area - from Port Mouton Bay to Matthews Lake (Hemeon's Head). Dirk van
Loon at the Harrison Lewis Coastal Centre and the Coastal Queens Place
hosted us before and after the count.

We are pleased to share some results with comparisons to 2012 and previous
counts:

- Despite cold and windy weather, 25 volunteers participated - by far our
best volunteer turnout!
- Our first impression immediately after the count was that numbers of
waterfowl were lower than past years. This was partially true: numbers of
diving ducks were lower and there were fewer waterfowl within Migratory
Bird Sanctuaries, but numbers of Canada Goose and American Black Duck were
actually higher.
- Highest numbers of Canada Goose and American Black Ducks ever recorded on
a Wild for Waterfowl Count. In fact, American Black Duck numbers more than
doubled compared to 2012.
- Lower numbers of different types (diversity) of waterfowl compared to
2012; however, waterfowl diversity was similar to other years.
- Lower numbers and types of diving bay ducks and seaducks, including
Harlequin Duck.
- 71% less Harlequin Duck compared to 2012. It=92s possible that wintering
Harlequins and other seaducks had not yet arrived at the IBA.
- At Port Joli Bay, Port l=92Hebert Bay and Sable River Bay, fewer waterfow=
l
were observed within Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS) boundaries. In 2013,
58% of 2722 total waterfowl were within MBS boundaries in contrast with 95%
of 2103 waterfowl in 2012. In Port l=92Hebert Bay there were no Canada Goo=
se
or American Black Ducks observed within the MBS.

If you'd like more info, feel free to contact me (sabbott@birdscanada.org)
or Doug van Hemessen (doug.vanHemessen@natureconservancy.ca). We hope you
can join us for next year's count!

Happy Holidays,
Sue Abbott
