Hi,

Wendy and I did a brisk 30-min walk at PPP today and indeed the duck was =
still there. It certainly is a scaup but not sure whether lesser or =
greater - it spent the whole time we watched it preening! Just around =
the rocky corner, there was a mixed flock of scaup. We did see the very =
tightly-huddled group of eiders - there must have been about 50 birds =
but very hard to count although the 6 males were easy to pick out! Also =
noted the extremely hardy Purple Sandpipers (about 10-12 birds in all) =
getting regularly doused by the cold Atlantic as they foraged along the =
shore, just beside the ruins.

Happy New Year, everyone!!

Bob McDonald

Pleasant park)

The duck was too far out for a clear view, but it had a dark head (no =
white spot) and a white back. It was much smaller than the black ducks =
nearby. I=E2=80=99m thinking scaup. Has anyone else spotted it? I =
seem to recall a post about a bufflehead in that area(?). We =
didn=E2=80=99t see the eiders. This was around 3:00 yesterday =
afternoon.
  Jane
