*This Week's Sky at a Glance*
*January 17 - 25*

As the stars come out, face north and look very high overhead for
*Cassiopeia*, oriented now like a flattened letter M. As the night
proceeds, the M swings down in the northwest and tilts sideways.

This is the *Big Dipper's* time of year to swing up from the low
north-northeast after dusk, to stand on its handle in the northeast by
about 10 p.m.

*Sirius *twinkles brightly in early evening below *Orion *in the southeast.
Around 9 p.m., Sirius shines precisely below fiery *Betelgeuse *in Orion's
shoulder. Sirius leads early in the evening, Betelgeuse leads later.

On Friday, January 24, the *Moon *will go into its Last-quarter Phase
meaning it will rise at midnight and set at noon.

On Saturday, January 18, the *sun *rose at 7:56 a.m. and will set at 5:04
p.m. giving 9 hours 8 minutes of daylight hours. On Saturday, January 25,
the sun will rise at 7:50 a.m. and set at 5:14 p.m. to give 9 hours
24minutes of daylight hours (These values are for Moncton, New Brunswick).
*The days are getting longer! *
*This Week's Planet Roundup *

*Mercury *(magnitude -0.9) is emerging into twilight view after sunset.
Look for it above the west-southwest horizon about 30 to 45 minutes after
sunset. It's becoming higher in darker twilight every day. Mercury is
beginning its best evening apparition since last June.

*Venus *(about magnitude -4.4) is now plain to see low in early dawn; look
east-southeast. It is becoming higher every day.

*Mars *(magnitude +0.5) rises around midnight. Spica, not quite as bright
at magnitude +1.0, rises about 6=B0 below it. They're highest in the south
before the first light of dawn, with Spica now to Mars's lower left.

*Jupiter *(magnitude -2.7) dominates the eastern sky in the evening and
crosses nearly overhead around midnight.

*Saturn *(magnitude +0.6) rises around 3 a.m. and is well up in the
southeast as dawn begins to brighten. By then it's far lower left of Mars
and Spica, and even farther below brighter Arcturus.
