*This Week's Sky at a Glance*

*January 25-31*

Every day, *Mercury *is getting higher and easier to spot after sundown;
look for it low in the west-southwest as twilight fades. Mercury is
beginning its best evening apparition since last June.

This is the frigid time of year when the *Little Dipper* (mostly dim) hangs
straight down from Polaris shortly after dark. Look due north.

Jupiter this month turns the *Winter Triangle* into a bigger, brighter
Winter Diamond. Its bottom is *Sirius*, its two side corners are *Betelgeuse
*and *Procyon*, and Jupiter forms its top. The diamond tilts leftward in
early evening and stands vertically in the south around 11 p.m.

On Thursday, January 30, the *moon *will enter its New Phase and will be a
Perigee Moon. The Moon will not be visible during the night. Expect higher
high tides and lower low tides.

On Saturday, January 25, the *sun *rose at 7:50 a.m. and will set at 5:14
p.m. giving 9 hours 24minutes of daylight hours.  On Saturday, February 1,
the sun will rise at 7:42 a.m. and set at 5:24 p.m. to give 9 hours 42
minutes of daylight hours (These values are for Moncton, New Brunswick).
The days are getting longer!

*Mercury *(magnitude -0.9) is having an excellent apparition in the evening
twilight. Look low in the west-southwest as twilight fades.

*Venus *(magnitude -4.6) shines brightly in the dawn; look east-southeast.
It gets higher every day. Venus is revealed as a crescent in a telescope or
even good binoculars.

*Mars *(magnitude +0.4) rises around midnight.

*Jupiter *(magnitude -2.6) dominates the eastern sky in early evening and
crosses nearly overhead around 11 p.m.

*Saturn *(magnitude +0.5) rises around 2 a.m. and is high in the
south-southeast as dawn begins to brighten. By then it's far to the left of
Mars.
