To all,
yesterday=E2=80=99s very high tide was quite impressive even on the =
Atlantic side of the province. Chezzetcook Inlet, Petpeswick Inlet, =
Musquodoboit Harbour. But no media reports of any significant dyke =
breaches or other tidal flooding anywhere in the province so far...

Hi John & All, Feb 2, 2014=20
Some relatively minor changes in dykeland configuration and =
management would offer protection from local breaches in a dyke due to =
storm surges but getting the powers that be to plan effectively is an =
exercise in frustration.

This practical approach, where there is dykeland, was brought over =
by the Acadians and practiced as a way to replenish fertility. At =
intervals, as necessary, a dyke was breached to allow seawater to flood =
a small polder and deposit 10-15 cm of fresh mud. Small is the key word. =
This approach is useful only if dykelands are partitioned into =
sub-units.

It would thus be quite possible, by good management, to keep =
building the elevation of dykelands and keep pace with the rise in sea =
level and thereby avoid the horrendous consequences of having large =
areas of land 30' below sea level (include roads, sewage ponds, shopping =
centers, etc.) suddenly flooded by one breach in the dyke. In addition =
this approach avoids the cost of having to build ever higher dykes.

I met with Hank Kolstee (Supervisor of Land Protection) in 2007 but =
he for years had been required to make one dollar do the job of three so =
had no leeway to do more than top up dykes. His response in outline was =
find the money and we will give it a try.=20

I have posted two photos taken today at East Point, N. Grand Pre, with =
a 16.5 m tide with no wind or wave action whatsoever. With a low =
pressure system and a wind from the N or NE, no one would have been =
walking on this dyke.
