Jim et al,
In the past I have used Niger seeds but I discovered after a while that =
the finches were just as happy, and possibly happier, with black-oil =
Sunflower seed which are much cheaper....maybe that would work for you.

Subject: [NatureNS] Pine Siskins & Niger seed
I too have seen almost no pine siskins for a long time (with rare =
exceptions and just tiny numbers), and my Niger seed has been eaten very =
rarely; but a neighbor of mine just a couple of lots to the north had =
lots of siskins and redpolls with goldfinches last winter? or the winter =
before, and I had very few of them with few Niger eaters. And for some =
reason my yard just doesn't attract large numbers of goldfinches. Jim =
in Wolfville.

Bought a 40 pound bag of Nyjer a few years ago and still have half =
of it. With the exception of Canada Jays, which I've never had, =
compared to say 5 years ago the above are all quite rare in my back yard =
as well these days. Haven't seen a Sisken in several years.

Gee, when I was really young, even pine grosbeaks ere not unusual!
And cardinals and turkey vultures are normal visitors down here.
The times, they are a changin=92.

I received an email today from John Glanville of Petite Riviere =
letting me know that seven pine siskins had arrived from nowhere. I =
personally have not seen a pine siskin myself all winter with a lot of =
birding. Hopefully they will hang in that area until the weekend. =20
