Hi James=2C
I've had betters success ID'ing numbers on a leg band using a video cam=
era (preferably HD) with a good optical zoom (at least 10-12power) and the =
ability to scan the resulting video frame by frame. I used this technique l=
ast summer to read most of the engraved digits/letters on an aluminum leg b=
and on a Hairy Woodpecker at my feeders. I found binoculars and scopes were=
just not fast enough to capture and focus on a moving leg band. Hope this =
helps. All the best. =20

Hi all:
=20
I'm thinking Paul MacDonald can answer my question on this one=2C but other=
s are welcome to answer my question if they know the answer. =20
=20
I know of a lady who has many mallards coming to her yard at the moment. S=
he estimates around 2000=2C but I find that unlikely. Anyhow=2C she says t=
hat two or three of these birds have leg bands. I believe they are referre=
d to as rings now. Anyhow=2C my question is are these band numbers readabl=
e with a scope? The reason I ask is I will make a special trip if the numb=
ers are readable to try and see where these ducks might have come from. I =
appreciate your responses.
