Indeed, this bird ought to be sought vigorously. DUSKY THRUSH? would not lo=
ok like "a pale robin" in any plumage, If it had any rufous below, even mot=
tled, and is not a robin, it might answer to the even much less likely NAU=
MANN'S THRUSH? ?. But who knows?

Cheers, Ian

Subject: [ValleyNature] check for pale robins for something noteworthy

MARCH 1, 2014 - In mid-afternoon Sherman Bleakney called to report a weird-=
looking bird in a back-yard flock of about 20 robins. The strange one look=
ed at first like a pale robin. It was only about 5 metres from his window =
at the top of Kent Ave. in Wolfville. But then he noticed he noticed a lot=
of white on the bird's head. The robins departed, but he looked in his Na=
t. Geogr. field guide, and on p. 358 found the DUSKY THRUSH as a possible c=
andidate. But the dusky thrush is Siberian and occasionally is found along=
our west coast from Alaska to California and a bit further east, but no re=
cords mentioned anywhere near Canada's east.

I asked Sherman about rufous on the wing and about the pattern of white on =
the head, but he could not elaborate with any surety. I also asked him abo=
ut the fieldfare and redwing thrushes on the same page of the field guide, =
but he said the dusky thrush was the best candidate shown there.

Robins in flocks are commonly seen in our area of western Wolfville, and th=
is notice is to alert naturalists to check out those flocks when possible f=
or possible noteworthy flock-mates!

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
