*This Week's Sky at a Glance*
*March 7 - 15*

On Friday evening, March 7, look below the *Moon *in evening for orange
*Aldebaran*, an orange giant star 65 light-years from Earth. Far off to
their left is *Betelgeuse *in the top of Orion. Less far to their right are
the *Pleiades*.

On Saturday, March 8, the *Moon *will go into its First Quarter Phase
meaning it will rise at noon and set at midnight.

*Weeeee! Daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, March 9.
Clocks spring forward an hour. *

Late twilight is when *Sirius *now stands due south.

As spring approaches *Orion's Belt* isn't yet quite horizontal in early
evening. But it's getting there, as Orion tips down toward the southwest
for its seasonal decline and eventual departure.

The *Big Dipper* glitters high in the northeast these evenings, standing on
its handle. The two stars forming the front of the Dipper's bowl (currently
on top) are the Pointers; they point to Polaris, currently to their left.
If you follow the curve of the Dipper's handle out and around by a little
more than a Dipper length, you'll arc to *Arcturus*, now rising in the
east. Draw a line diagonally across the Dipper's bowl from where the handle
is attached, continue far on, and you'll go to *Gemini*.

On Saturday, March 8, the *sun *rose at 6:45 a.m. and will set at 6:15 p.m.
giving 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight hours.  On Saturday, March 15, the
sun will rise at 7:32 a.m. and set at 7:25 p.m. to give 11 hours 52 minutes
of daylight hours (These values are for Moncton, New Brunswick). The days
are getting longer, birds are getting brighter plumage
 and males are getting more vocal. Next week's report will announce
official Spring!

*This Week's Planet Roundup *

*Mercury *(magnitude +0.2) is low above the east-southeast horizon during
dawn, about 20=B0 lower left of bright Venus.

*Venus *(magnitude -4.7) shines as the bright "Morning Star" before and
during dawn; look southeast.

*Mars *(magnitude -0.7) rises around 10 p.m., a fiery blaze with icy Spica
5=B0 or 6=B0 to its right. The two are highest in the south around 3 a.m., =
with
Spica now lower right of Mars.

*Jupiter*, magnitude -2.4 dominates the sky overhead during evening.

*Saturn *(magnitude +0.4) rises around midnight and is highest in the south
before dawn. By then it's far left of Mars and Spica, and less far to the
upper right of Mars-coloured Antares.
