Hello again everyone,

I was asked privately a few questions on historical data and eBird followin=
g my message yesterday, and I thought I'd reply to everyone.

1) Are there tools to import data in batches from programs like Avisys=
, Excel files or other record keeping software?

2) Is eBird a good place to include those?

3) What constitute good data to import?

First off, the answers the first and second question are both a resounding =
yes! :) It is possible, and most definitely valuable.

You can import data from CSV file (comma delimited text file), by following=
 those instructions: http://help.ebird.org/customer/portal/articles/973915-=
uploading-data-to-ebird. It may take a little bit of work (or a lot, if you=
r records aren't already formatted or use a very outdated taxonomy), but th=
is is really a great way to increase the amount of data in eBird, and make =
sure your years of records do not go extinct.

As I mentioned in my email yesterday, those who participated by doing point=
counts in the Breeding Bird Atlas can also retrieve a file already correct=
ly formatted for import in eBird: http://www.birdscanada.org/birdmon/defaul=
t/ebird_export.jsp I am working on a better interface to simplify that proc=
ess, and push the data directly in eBird without having to download and upl=
oad a file, but it is not yet ready.

As to what constitute good data, the answer is generally any records for wh=
ich there is a date and a reasonably precise location attached to it. It is=
very possible to enter only individual records (e.g. if you want to build =
your lifelist with all of your past records, or include rare species record=
s only), but the most valuable records from a scientific and conservation p=
erspective are those where all observations are reported with some effort a=
ttached (e.g. a daily checklist with a known number of hours), because thes=
e allow to measure relative abundance and evaluate change over time and spa=
ce (e.g. the STEM maps).

Finally, I should point out that there is an app (of course) called BirdLog=
, which works for both Android and iPhone, and is very useful to submit dat=
a from the field. http://www.birdseyebirding.com/index.php/birdlog-ebird-ap=
p

I hope this helps!

Denis Lepage

p.s. another thing I just love about eBird is that the entire database is a=
vailable for anyone to download and use for free. You can access the Canadi=
an data from our NatureCounts web site http://www.birdscanada.org/birdmon/d=
efault/searchquery.jsp or make a request directly in eBird, under Explore d=
ata, then Download data.
