hi folks,

While shovelling this morning I head a *Pine Siskin* fly over, had two
male *Purple
finches *at the feeder and a singing *Northern Cardinal*. Forest Hill Rd.
Kentville

Another thought on how to manage posting our sightings across multiple
venues...

I think Andy H. and others have mentioned this in the past...eBird lets you
Tweet or Facebook (and email) links to your checklists:

In eBird, under 'My eBird, Manage my Observations'...choose the 'share'
option and using the icons on the right you can 'send link via Facebook or
Twitter':
(you can also get here once you submit a checklist on the eBird site)

The *Twitter *'auto text' of the sighting is a bit cumbersome and does not
indicate species in the list so I changed to the following using bitly (one
of a number of url shortening websites: bitly.com) to shorten the url:

"eBirdList: ForestHillRd,KentvilleNS,Mar27 - NOCA, PISI, PUFI
http://bit.ly/1gZYR0b"

In the *Facebook *option, using the dropdown menu at the top left, you can
choose to 'share with group' then to the right of the dropdown menu start
typing in 'Nova Scotia Bird Society' and it should come up. Unfortunately,
you can not change the auto-text that eBird provides (to my knowledge? and
an eBird logo is needed on this!!) but in the box that says 'Say something
about this' you can add notable species or other comments.

In both cases (Facebook and Twitter) the link takes you to the eBird
checklist which contains a link to a map of the location. Presumably any
photos you uploaded with the checklist would also be observable here, or,
in Facebook or Twitter, you could then upload a photo if desired to
accompany the post.

This could possibly reduce some redundancy in our posting-efforts but the
link to the checklist also serves as a DOI or unique identifier of the
sightings to help folks recognize repeat observations. While all details of
the hypothetical Crested Caracara at 28 Forest Hill Rd, Kenvtille (note:
'hypothetical') would not be there directly on the Facebook
post/Twitter/email, you could easily trace them.

Conceptually, the "e-telephone tree" could start at eBird in most cases and
then radiate from there...
However, I agree fully with Andy that there is a need, and good resources
available (human and non-human), to parse observations from the NSBS
Facebook feed and also get them onto the NSBS site.

Incidentally, photographers should also check out this neat post on getting
photo records into eBird using a plugin in Lightbox:
http://alpenglow.info/lightroombirding/ - a concept that could be applied
to other photo software and sites...

cheers,
James.
