Hi Nancy & All,
    It will take some trial & error to learn how much can be taken from 
small trees without weakening the root system, where I suspect most of the 
reserves are stored, and this would lead to early decline.
    Under good growing conditions Hard Maple can be tapped much earlier than 
40 years. I started tapping the three Maple that I planted on our lawn in 
1967 when they were 10 years old with no obvious adverse effects.
    I understand that the sap of some Hard Maple trees is unusually rich in 
sugar. If this is a genetic effect and not due to better growing conditions 
then the small tree system would be well suited to tree stock improvement.
