Just a bit more on Bermuda Petrels.

The population surviving on Bermuda is very small - just over 100 pairs - a=
lthough increasing.

So the chance of seeing one at sea is slim. Despite this, there are occasio=
nal reports from commercial

sea-birding trips off North Carolina. Geolocators were put on a few birds b=
etween 2009 and 2001. The

data from geolocators is not very precise, but it showed that some birds st=
uck around the subtropical

Atlantic while others, mainly in the spring, headed north into NS and NL wa=
ters; one made its way to the

NE Atlantic SW of Ireland, and possibly to Spanish / Portuguese waters. Int=
erestingly, the only previous

sighting from our waters, a bird identified retrospectively, was in April =
2009. So April seems to be

the month and Michael Force was in the right place at the right time - and =
knew what to look for.

So should we all be out at Chebucto Head in April scanning for a Bermuda Pe=
trel? Probably not .

These birds feed mainly on large zooplankton (e.g. shrimp) and small squid)=
, especially in warmer

waters. However - of the few very scarce pelagic species that inhabit the w=
estern North Atlantic

(including Black-capped Petrel, Audubon's Shearwater and Barolo Shearwater)=
, Bermuda Petrel is the

only one that seems to move into cooler waters after its breeding season (J=
anuary-June), although always very far offshore.

I thought the info, about geo-location, showing that these amazing birds do=
indeed come this far north, as mentioned in the ABA blog mentioned in this=
thread, was fascinating. As an aside, I recently read a great book, that I=
can recommend to anyone interested in bird conservation and Bermuda Petrel=
s, called
Rare Birds: The Extraordinary Tale of the Bermuda Petrel and the Man Who Br=
ought It Back from Extinction by Elizabeth Gehrman. It tells the story of t=
he rediscovery of these birds some 300 years after they had thought to be e=
xtinct, and of the singular efforts of David Wingate to conserve and save t=
he species. David was an incredible man, and amongst other things had a spe=
cial relationship with NS, partly through his friendship with several NS na=
turalists and birders. I remember seeing a wonderful talk he gave in Halifa=
x about Bermuda Petrels in the early 1980s.

I can also recommend browsing this website - http://www.wildlifetracking.or=
g/ , particularly the sections on seabirds that are seen, e.g. off Brier Is=
land, for more fascinating info. on seabird movements, as well as the Black=
-capped Petrel links mentioned in the ABA blog..
