Jim: the generally well-known species is the brine shrimp Artemia salina from hypersaline pools, but that can't be it, it's fresh water.
What's this particular species and how big is the animal? What do they do when the pool dries up, encyst?

Ian, THANKS for the info' about the fairy shrimp pond, and I am very glad to hear that. I am away until May 10th, and I think the annual field trip to that pond is the following weekend (Saturday the 17th?). Cheers from Jim in central B.C.

A few highlights from a hike at Blomidon Provincial Park, 27 April 2014. Nothing too exceptional to note, but lots of spring-firsts, and one new personal observation.

1 Turkey Vulture (1st I've seen in Kings Co) riding on a thermal south of park check-in office (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S18113821)

5 spring beauties in flower (Claytonia caroliniana)

Large patches of wild leek (Allumim tricoccum)

2 well-developed purple trillium (Trillium erectum).

It's worth noting that the "Fairy Shrimp Pond" (Does anyone know if this pond has a name?) was very very high. The water was well over much of the surrounding path.

Cheers,
IM
