  I believe they are after some larvae as I wonder if they =
aren=E2=80=99t digging up and eating sunflower seeds stuck in the =
ground/grass by Blue Jays, too. I have a similar situation here and that =
is what I have concluded. At first I thought they were following =
Flickers, that make a slightly smaller hole. I sat down, with a tea and =
watched to see what they were doing the other day.=20

  The little critters have dug up or eaten the tops off all the =
sunflower seeds I planted.=20

  Dear All,                                        June 12, 2014
      Last week, for at least 10 minutes at Evergreen Nursing Home, I =
watched=20
  a chipmunk making holes rapidly and feeding on something in a small =
area of=20
  lawn. When it left, I found many funnel-shaped holes about 2 cm deep =
and 3=20
  cm across. Some of these had a circular hole in the bottom about 0.5 =
cm in=20
  diameter.

      I gather it was feeding on some insect that was being detected by =
sound=20
  or scent because just about every digging was followed by a snack =
break.=20
  Subsequently I noticed many similar holes in nearby flower beds. It =
must=20
  have been dark and fairly small because from ~15' away I could not see =
any=20
  part of this food.

  Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville=20
