=0AHi Doug and Randy, =0A=C2=A0 =0AThis is an issue that is well known and =
one that requires a decision on the part of both parties. The rule of thumb=
for Nova Scotia would be not to cut the hay before July 7 and probably not=
before July 15 to be safe. I think the figures quoted are that waiting unt=
il this date results in about 85% of the nests being successful. A cut even=
a week earlier results in a huge drop in the success rates. These dates ar=
e weather dependent of course so a late spring may result in pushing things=
 a few days. =0A=C2=A0 =0AThe problem from a farmer=E2=80=99s point of view=
is that the protein content of his or her hay drops dramatically after abo=
ut the third week in June. By mid-July there is certainly not enough protei=
n content to support milk cows. I=E2=80=99m fortunate in that my tenant far=
mer cuts when I=E2=80=99ve asked him to (after mid-July). He uses the hay p=
roduced this way to feed his horses and it=E2=80=99s just fine for that pur=
pose. =0A=C2=A0 =0AThere are a number of strategies that have been tried to=
walk the line between the needs of the farmer and the needs of the Bobolin=
ks. However in this era when a farmer often needs to cut early and cut ofte=
n to make ends meet it is a difficult problem. One strategy is to take an e=
arly cut in late May before the Bobolinks have started to nest. This may re=
tard the second growth until late enough in the season so that Bobolinks ca=
n fledge. Another strategy is to plant late maturing varieties of hay. Howe=
ver, both of these strategies hit the farmer=E2=80=99s pocketbook. A third =
strategy used in Vermont was to concede that the two goals could not always=
coexist and to compensate farmers for the loss in hay quality with $$$. Ob=
viously this requires funding. =0A=C2=A0 =0AAll the best, =0A=C2=A0 =0ALanc=
