On a recent boat trip from Mahone Bay to Pearl Island, the captain =
pointed out a small oyster farm we passed and he mentioned that the =
parasite had wiped out the harvest there.

Subject: [NatureNS] oyster fishery and aquaculture in Bras d'Or Lake ?

Is anyone on NatureNS following the oyster industry in Cape Breton? I =
have just returned from a multi-day canoe trip through the Bras =
d=E2=80=99Or Lake and was surprised by how much of the oyster =
aquaculture infrastructure seemed to be derelict or out of the water. =20

MSX, the mysterious microscopic parasite was detected there in 2002, =
resulting in the virtual closure of the industry there. Has the oyster =
industry recovered? Has the parasite, thought to be originally from the =
Pacific, spread to other oyster-producing parts of the Maritimes? =20
