The environmental assessment of the Chignecto Terence Bay Wind Farm Project
was posted on the Nova Scotia Environment website today,
http://www.novascotia.ca/nse/ea/chebucto-terence-bay-wind-farm-project.asp.
The site contains all the information available on the project including the
procedure for making comments on the assessment and the project in general.
The deadline for comments is August 1st.

For those who live in the Sambro to Prospect area or who bird in this area,
I would encourage you to review the assessment especially as it pertains to
birds. The main part of the bird study can be found starting on page 59 of
the registration document (Part 2).

Wind projects that are in coastal areas deserve special scrutiny as it
pertains to impacts on birds. This is especially true of wind farms near
major coastal headlands. These headlands and the peninsulas leading to the
mainland can be areas of significant dawn re-orientation of large numbers of
migratory birds that have been taken offshore for a variety of reasons. Just
before dawn and shortly afterwards is a critical time for birds to get their
bearings and to land safely or resume their flight in the desired direction.
This can be difficult if it is foggy or the birds are stressed.

The environmental assessment of coastal wind farms should include studies of
the behaviour of birds during nocturnal migration and especially at the time
of dawn re-orientation in order to ensure that turbines do not pose a threat
to birds that are re-orienting. I hope knowledgeable birders who are
familiar with the area will review this document and determine if an
adequate assessment has been conducted as to the risk of the project to
migratory birds.
